HUNTERS,
A faint glimmer of light, was slowly turning the inky, black darkness to minute shades of gray.
Shapes, ever so slowly, were starting to become rocks and trees. Impatiently, I was trying to will
the coming daylight, at a faster pace. It was mid October, and the onset of the rut, was just starting
to be felt among the deer, keeping them moving more than normal. I was perched, some twenty
feet up, in my portable stand, hanging on the side of a sturdy white oak. I was feeling extremely
confident that morning. My bow and were as one, after much shooting all summer, so no problem
there. I had done some of my hunting, here before, and knew from scouting, that again this year, I
would see deer of the nature I wanted. To make it even more interesting, during the hour and a
half, that I sitting in the dark, I could hear deer going back and forth around my stand. Pink light
had arrived, and low and behold, the first deer, that was headed my way, was a buck, and he
definitely, interested me. Some days, things seem perfect, and as the buck came closer, he turned
broad side and I could quickly see, he was going to pass by, at about 18 yards. His nose was to the
ground and he was covering ground at a fast walk. I swung my recurve, ahead to an opening, and
when his chest appeared, released my arrow. The white fletching flashed toward the deer and he
bolted, with what I thought, was his death run. The shot looked perfect. As I waited, for time to do
its work, the increasing daylight in the forest, revealed a small limb, that had grown into my
shooting lane, this past summer. Finally, enough time had passed, and I climbed down to collect my
prize. Much to my surprise, I could not find any blood on my arrow buried in the soil. The angle of
the arrow, stuck in the ground, and a small, fresh cut on the afore mentioned limb, told the sad
story.
The point, I am bringing out, is now, with spring here, and summer around the corner, there is
time, to keep your shooting lanes clear, for this up coming, fall hunting season. With leaves on the
branches, it makes it a little easier to spot the ones, that need to go. If the area you hunt, is some
distance from home, or the first time you are there, is when you are actually ready to begin your
hunt, you can still trim your lanes, if you are hunting from a stand. Small saws and pruning shears
work well, but there always those limbs way out of reach, that are in the way. A long handled
pruner will work, although it is extremely unhandy to carry around. I carry some strong cord and
lash my folding saw to a limb, that I find on the ground. By doing that, I can reach just about every
area, I need to cut. Don't get carried away and rearrange the forest, just make sure, you have some
openings. I will rub soil on the cut areas, so the light wood color, does not stand out, if I am going
to hunt within a week or two. Forests are constantly being timbered, as well as, storms and wind
creating changes, so deer are use to some change. By covering up the pruning, as much as we can,
will help keep the deer off of high alert, making it a lot easier, to get a relaxed shot. As years have
gone by, I pay more and more attention to every little detail, as it only takes one weak link, to
break a strong chain.
We have made a considerable number of changes to our website. We have added an archive page,
of all past newsletters ( due to numerous requests ), and will keep adding the newsletters, to the
archive page, in the future. You will be able to go and read, any of the past newsletters, anytime
you want.
We have, also added a hunting article page to our website, and will continue, to add more articles,
on that page, in the future.
I would think, if you purchase a new truck, DVD player, lawn mower, etc, you would expect to
receive an instruction manual or guide, to allow you, to get the best use of your purchase.
