HUNTERS
Attitude! Yes, I said attitude. Your attitude, while you are hunting, probably has more effect on success
and failure, than any other single factor there is. I read somewhere once, that people with a positive attitude
live longer. Well it is no wonder, you can’t get away from yourself and if you are negative and down all the
time, who would want to live with a grump. Just kidding. All jokes aside, a positive outlook on life  does
wonders for us while hunting. I am going to confine my discussion to hunting, you can take it where ever you
want to.
Being positive keeps you in your stand or on your still hunt, all the allotted time you have available. It is no
secret, the more time spent  afield, the greater you improve your odds of a shot. Years ago, I was at a
seminar put on by noted bow hunter Gene Wensel and one comment he made that evening still sticks in my
mind. He was asked by a hunter in the audience, how could an average hunter ever hope to have success
taking trophy bucks, as compared to him, his brother Barry or any other top notch trophy hunter. Gene
replied “ If I were going to bet on the success of a hunter, it would be on an average hunter, that spends a lot
of time hunting as opposed to an extremely good trophy hunter, that has limited time.” Positive thinking  will
keep you hunting much longer, because you just know that sooner or later, that deer is going to be there.
Have you ever experienced this scenario? You have been on your stand for hours and nothing has happened
the whole time. You decide to write this day off and leave your stand.. Just as you get to the bottom of the
tree you have been in, or stand up and start to move from your ground blind, a deer snorts, you whirl around
and there is a buck  20 to 50 yards away. If only I would have waited another 15 minutes, you lament.
Now let’s say you were patient, the deer approached your location while you were still ready to do
business, came into perfect range, but you blow the shot for one reason or another. It is pretty hard to stay
upbeat at that point. But you know what, you can never bring that opportunity back again. Don’t take away
the chance to repeat it. If you keep going and say to yourself, “Well Mr., you won that round, but lets see
who wins the next one.” Life is full of averages and the best baseball hitter in the world still makes more
outs than hits. So when we screw up, we just improved our odds of success, if we use the same analogy of
baseball. If you bat 333 average, and made 2 outs in a row, guess what, next time up, your average says you
are going to get  a hit. If that batter goes up against the pitcher thinking, it is no use, I just going to make
another out, he probably will. But if he goes up there saying, you got me twice, buddy, now it is my turn, he is
going to get a hit more times than not. A full time deer has many advantages over us part time hunters, we
don’t need to give them more with a sorry attitude.
Contributions we can make, in order to help ourselves, are thorough scouting and stand preparation,
physical conditioning, having all our clothing ( especially, dressing right for the current conditions ) &
equipment in top notch shape, and make sure we can shoot straight, by lots of practice beforehand. When all
of our practice shots have been going to the center of the target, we are comfortable, because we dressed
well for that day’s weather, plus we have really done our homework this year and know we are in the right
spot, it is a whole lot easier to stay positive. Being positive allows us to capitalize on each and every
opportunity and that my friends, often spells the difference between success and failure. When the season is
over, I have done my best, and still had no success, I am OK with that. I did everything I could do. I am still
positive, because I was doing something, I dearly love to do. Hunting whitetail bucks.

Until next month, all the best to each of you,

Keith Dotterer
